Fill Date

When will the drive be full? Three numbers from today and one from a while back.

Today
A while back

Where do I find these numbers?

Windows: open File Explorer and click This PC. Each drive shows "X GB free of Y GB". (Settings, System, Storage shows the same.)

Mac: Apple menu, System Settings, General, Storage; or select the drive in Finder and choose File, Get Info.

An earlier figure: a screenshot, a note, or your memory of it. The Space Logbook keeps the readings for you next time.

GB here are the GB Windows shows (1 GB = 1,073,741,824 bytes). A Mac counts 1 GB as 1,000,000,000 bytes, so a Mac figure reads about 7% higher for the same space. Use one computer's figures throughout and the date comes out the same either way.

How it works

Used space is the drive size minus free space. The change in used space between your two readings, divided by the days between them, is how fast the drive is filling. Free space divided by that pace is the number of days left.

It is a straight line: a big download, a new game or a cleanup moves the date. That is why the logbook keeps a reading every so often.
